The Film Industry - Production, Distribution, Campaign and Expedition (A & B)
Production
- Needs to be an idea to start the production
- Financing can be done in various ways, it can be produced by one production team or more which is called co-production.
- Cast and crew must be considered in the production stage, cast costs are called above the line costs and everything else such as crew are called below the line costs
- In recent years there has been a huge change in how films are produced; filming has changed from being analogue to digital, on film man made edits were made and it was risky and dangerous
Distribution
- Distributors are how you find out about the product
- Viral marketing has become a huge platform to distribute films in recent years through social media etc
The Role of the Distributor
- They consider who, where, why and how they will sell the product to the audience
- Film festivals give distributors a chance to buy into a product and sell it to an audience
- Distributors must sell the product to the best of their ability
- Films must have - Unique Selling Point (USP), this could be actors, directors, producers etc
- Target Audience - there needs to be a solid understanding of who the film is intended for so it can be distributed well, Comicon is a convention that many superhero films are shown at since it meets the needs of the fans
- Release Date - this a crucial element since this allows time for teasers and trailers to be released to gain hype
Campaign
The campaign essentially ties in all the adverts, trailers and teasers for a product to make it cohesive, it bombards the audience to notify them with knowledge of the film to build hype and make to product stand out from the rest for a particular audience
Expedition
- This is the make or break for the product
- It's essentially the showing of someones art in a gallery (film in the cinema)
- The cinemas themselves should know their audience, they need to know what films will suit the demographic/location for their cinema
- Not all films are shown in every cinema, it may not meet the cinemas demographic
- It also depends on how many screens the cinema has and if they will benefit from showing a film at that particular location
- The Three P's - PRODUCED, PUBLICISED and PROMOTED
- The cinema experience must capture imagination and attention through the use of surround sound and visuals
- The first Multiplex cinema was built in 1985
- Cinemas have been hugely impacted by piracy and rentals
- The multiplex reinvented the cinema experience, no matter what the location of the cinema must be considered such as if the parking is good since that attracts people
- Many cinemas carry out customer analysis to determine what films will suit the demographic
